Restoring Sheffield’s Oldest Occupied Building with Lime Plaster (700 Year Old Building)

When we were approached to work on Sheffield’s oldest occupied building, we knew we were stepping into history. At over 700 years old, this remarkable structure has stood the test of time, and it was an honour to play a part in preserving its legacy.

The project required the use of traditional lime plaster, a material historically used in buildings of this age. Unlike modern plaster, lime plaster is breathable and flexible, making it ideal for historic properties as it prevents moisture build-up and allows the structure to move naturally over time.

Our team carefully assessed the condition of the existing plaster, identifying areas in need of repair or replacement. Working meticulously to match the original materials and techniques, we applied fresh lime plaster to restore the building while preserving its historic character.

Restoring a building of this age is always a challenge, requiring attention to detail and a deep respect for its heritage. We’re proud to have contributed to maintaining a piece of Sheffield’s history, ensuring it remains a cherished landmark for future generations.

This project highlights the importance of combining craftsmanship with an understanding of traditional materials, and we’re thrilled to have been part of such a meaningful restoration.
